About me

Hi there! My name is Gavin. I have an M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. My main research examines how language and culture shape human relationships with threatened species and places, with most of my work focused on Hawaiian green sea turtles in Hawai‘i. There, I explore how tourism and conservation influence how we think, feel, and act around these incredible creatures.

A little more background: My Ph.D. training is in sociocultural linguistics, with specializations in intercultural interaction and environmental communication. In short, my research explores these 3 basic questions:

  1. What stories do we tell about our relationship to the natural world?
  2. How and why do we tell these stories?
  3. Do these stories help or hinder our collective ability to address the environmental challenges of our time; what destructive stories dominate, and what alternative stories could we be telling?

My research interests today have spilled over into a whole bunch of other topics at the intersection of communication, culture, and environment. I write about these topics on Medium, as well as my weekly ecolinguistics digest: Wild Ones. You can also learn more about my academic research here, or follow me on Twitter!

Besides writing and doing research, I spend most of my time downloading too many research articles to ever read, wishing I hiked more, and surfing at my favorite spots here on O‘ahu to maintain my sanity in these crazy times.

My Writing

My writing on Medium is focused on three main areas: 1) ideas in ecocultural storytelling and communication, 2) nonfiction & science writing tips and strategies, and 3) book summaries of key ideas that inform and inspire me, and hopefully others too.

Much of my writing in ecolinguistics and environmental communication can be found on the Medium publication I run called Wild Ones.

In addition to my public-facing writing on Medium, I also actively publish research in the fields of applied linguistics, interactional sociolinguistics, and environmental communication. You can find links to my published research here.
