Thanks for sharing your perspective David! I taught English in Japan for a year with JET years ago, but don't think anything about discrimination was taught in the classes I assisted in. It's fascinating to hear about your students' reactions to the Civil Rights Movement and Racism in the U.S. And connecting it to discrimination in Japan was a great idea, as I remember stories from some of my Japanese friends there who were not considered 'real' Japanese (for example, because they were mixed race or of Korean ancestry) tell me how they were discriminated against.
